Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block

The sphenopalatine ganglion block is a treatment option used in pain management for certain types of head and facial pain. The sphenopalatine ganglion, often shortened to SPG, is a small bundle of nerves located behind the nose. Although it is small, it plays an important role in pain signals and autonomic symptoms involving the head, face, eyes, nose, and sinuses. One division of the trigeminal nerve, which is one of the main nerves involved in headache and facial pain, passes through the SPG. A sphenopalatine ganglion block can provide significant relief in selected patients with difficult or recurring pain conditions. 

A sphenopalatine ganglion block is designed to temporarily interrupt pain signaling from this nerve bundle.
